Read and Walk Challenge

Brought to you by the Fleming County Public Library, and proudly sponsored in part by your Rowan County Public Library!

We’re competing with four other counties for bragging rights, and you can help!  Anyone in Rowan County can enter the Read and Walk Challenge and help add steps to our grand total. The competition lasts through the month of August, and Bath, Fleming, Mason, and Robertson counties will be in on it, too!

Each month, the totals for the current event phase will be tallied and a new winner will be announced.  The trophy will travel from library to library to stay for that month with the current leader. We’ll be tracking the county with the most participants, the county with the most steps overall, the county that’s listened to the most audio books, and more!

Want to help Rowan County win this thing? Download the ChallengeRunner app on your Android or iOS device and use our code to support us: 89384Z-2WXW

There are no age restrictions; anyone who lives in Rowan County can join and help us win. To pitch in, just start walking and enter your steps!  If you already use a Fitbit, Garmin, or Apple Watch to keep up with your steps, you’ll need to check your total steps for the day and enter them into the ChallengeRunner app manually (the free version of the app doesn’t sync with devices, sorry).

If you don’t feel technologically inclined, don’t despair: You can still log your steps with this printable daily log. At the end of the month, turn your paper log in at our front circulation desk so we can submit your total!

Although we want to encourage audiobook listening, it’s not required, so listen to the birds, some music, or whatever you like—just get walking!

5K/1-Mile Fun Walk

Our Read and Walk Challenge will conclude with a 5K event on September 18!

Come to the Flemingsburg Dairy Queen to get started; registration begins at 7am, followed by the race at 8am. Participants can choose either the 5K or a 1-mile walk when registering. There will be water stations along the path of the race, and light refreshments for everyone after the race ends, while results are tallied.

To register, you can visit any participating library or download a printable form here, which you can drop off at our front circulation desk. Pre-registration is $10.00, or you can register on the day of the race for $15.00. Since there are T-shirts for participants, we encourage pre-registration to make sure that everyone gets the correct size. Extra shirts will be available the day of the race, but sizes will be limited.

Awards will be presented for the 1st-place winner of the 5K (only; not the 1-mile) in each of the following categories:

  • Child (10 & under)
  • Teen (11-18)
  • Young adult (19-29)
  • Adult (30-55)
  • Senior (56 & up)
