Radon on the RADAR

Click to see a larger version!

Thanks to a study being conducted by the University of Kentucky’s Radon Policy Research Program (part of BREATHE, a collaborative of the UK College of Nursing), we’re able to offer home radon detectors at no cost to our patrons, in an effort to raise awareness and reduce the effects of radon exposure.

Much like carbon monoxide, radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas, and exposure causes no immediately visible symptoms. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer overall, and the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. However, the only way to know how much radon we’re exposed to is to test for it, so we want to work with you to ensure a healthy community.

If you’re 18 or older, own your own home, and have a library card, then you’re eligible to check out one of the new radon detection kits provided by this program. Each of these kits (available at our front circulation desk) includes a Corentium Home by Airthings® Home Radon Detector and more information about the study, including instructions on how to use the detector.

We hope you’ll participate in keeping Kentucky breathable for yourself and our neighbors! You can ask for more information in person or by phone at (606) 784-7137.

Important: Kentucky law requires you to disclose to potential buyers whether your home has been tested for radon, and what the results were. Costs to mitigate high radon levels in your home may range from approximately $800-$2500.
