Summer Reading

Summer Reading 2025 title banner "Color our World" "Colorea nuestro Mundo"

Summer Reading signups start May 1!

It's our biggest program of the year! Earn chances to win free books and our grand prize—just by reading and having fun.

You can sign up to participate from May 1st through June 30th by visiting the library, giving us a call at (606) 784-7137, or using the online form on this page.

Everyone of every age is invited! After you register, you can pick up a Summer Reading bag that includes a log sheet you'll use to track your reading and the programs or events you attend (while supplies last). Turn your completed log sheet in to be eligible for our prize drawings. It's that simple!

Read on for more information about how to get involved, what we've got in store for the summer, prizes, and reading recommendations!

Kickoff

Once you're signed up, join us for our big kickoff event on May 31st: Color Chaos!

We're celebrating color this summer, which means there'll be plenty of fun in every shade! We're holding a celebration from 3–5pm May 31st to get things started off right, so come dressed to make a mess and ready to go home a different color than you came. We'll be messing with paints, chalk, and all kinds of stuff in every hue.

Remember to register beforehand so you've got your Summer Reading bag and log, and make sure to get your first stamp at the kickoff. We're only just beginning, and you'll want to come back for all the other colorful events we have in store!

Check out the linked event on our calendar for additional details. 👉🏽

You can also find and follow all our Summer Reading programming in the section below. Remember to sign up for email reminders so you never miss an event you want to be part of, and you can share to your social media directly from each event's page! 👇🏽

CLSP Color Our World logo

This year, Summer Reading celebrates colors! You know that book you read—the one whose title and author you can't recall? But you do remember the cover was blue! That's just a tiny example of how things can stick in our minds and shape the way we move through the world. After all, your average person sees in color!

That's why we're excited to make a real mess with y'all this summer: It's a party all through June and July to explore what different colors mean to us and appreciate the way they light up our imaginations! We've got the stuff you'd expect, like painting, dyeing, chalk art, and glowsticks...but we also have some ideas up our sleeve that might surprise you, like outdoor yoga where you can enjoy the shades of sunrise, a textiles tour, and even body art.

For Kids: Books come in every color, and so do people, food, animals, history, science, and...well, everything, really! We've got loads of hands-on learning and sensory fun for toddlers every Tuesday morning during Summer Reading, plus crafts, games, stories, and more all afternoon Thursdays for older children. They'll get to experience some of their favorite activities with a colorful twist, as well as awesome new stuff cooked up by Miss Atlanta and Miss Jenna!

For Teens: We haven't forgotten about y'all! Megan has a ton of art projects planned for you, from painting and scratch art to bath bombs, Perler beads, and (dare we say, our favorite?) a miniatures painting class. Whether it's making a mess outside or just vibing inside, canned crafts or something hot off the (3D) press, we promise you'll find something fun and colorful to do with your friends!

For Adults: We know you're just as excited for Summer Reading as the kids are, and we've got your back. Drop in and learn a new art style like hydro dipping or candle making, experience the relaxation of neurographic painting, go behind the scenes at the theater, or meet a local tattoo artist and see how it's done! Not to mention, we'll have even more color going on in the background with special collections, displays, prizes, and more in every hue.

So, are you in? Rhetorical question; we know we'll see you here at the library. We can't wait to help you color our world!

How to Participate

We want you to read—it doesn’t matter what! Physical books, graphic novels, ebooks, even listening to audiobooks counts. (Check out some of our recommendations in the book rivers below, to get you started!) When you register, we’ll give you the appropriate bag or log sheet for your age category:

  • Babies (0-35 months)
  • Children (3-5 years)
  • Children (6-8)
  • Children (9-12)
  • Teens (13-17)
  • Adults (18 and older)

Then, all you have to do is read age-appropriate books and attend eligible library events for your category, track them on the log sheet provided, and turn that log in at the end of our Summer Reading program! (Anyone can get a reading log, but program bags are available in limited quantity; first come, first served.)

If you prefer digital reading for any reason, give our apps a try! Check out our digital resources to get started with Libby, Hoopla, Freading, or Tumblebooks; all you need is your library card, and we’re happy to help you out in person or over the phone. There’s never been a better time to try them out (especially since they all have separate borrowing limits from your physical card)!

Prizes

Eligibility for prizes is determined by the number of age-appropriate books each participant reads, plus the number of Summer Reading programs they attend. To be entered for a chance to get free books at the end, find the registrant's age group on the list below for the minimum number of books that must be read and logged:

  • Babies (35 months and younger): 10+ books
  • Children (3-5 years): 5+ books
  • Children (6-8): 3+ books
  • Children (9-12): 3+ books
  • Teens (13-17): 3+ books
  • Adults (18 and older): 4+ books

For anyone unable to read on their own (such as toddlers), books read to them by someone else totally count! After all, books are best when they're shared.

To be eligible for our gift card drawings, participants must read the minimum number of books listed above and complete their Summer Reading bingo sheet. Winners in each age category will receive a $25USD gift card for our favorite local independent bookstore, Coffee Tree Books!

To be eligible for our grand prize drawings, participants must read at least five (5) books (or the minimum listed for their age category, whichever is greater), complete their bingo sheet, and be part of at least three (3) Summer Reading library events. Winners in each age category will receive a colorful, age-appropriate gift basket.

Be sure to get a stamp for each program you attend! Library staff will stamp the log included with your Summer Reading schedule. Every three (3) stamps earned will get you another entry into the grand prize drawing for your category (maximum of four [4] entries)!

We’ll announce our winners on social media at the end of the program; check out our calendar or your Summer Reading brochure for prize pickup and other dates.
