December's novel is The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson: The tale of Cussy Mary Carter, one of Kentucky's famous blue-skinned people and a Roosevelt pack horse librarian. Like so many in Appalachia, the folks of Troublesome Creek have to work too hard for everything they have—except for books. And yet, Cussy Mary faces a unique form of prejudice even as she transports learning and joy to her neighbors, who are all too willing to blame a Blue for any little unpleasantness.
